Accessibility statement

Our commitment

A library that cannot be used by everyone is not doing its job. Moolmes aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA across the catalogue, and to meet the same standard in the material we print and in the rooms where we run sessions. This statement describes where we stand, what we know is imperfect, and how to tell us when we have got something wrong.

How the site is built

• Semantic structure. Pages use headings in order, landmark regions, lists and tables with proper headers, so that assistive technology can present the structure rather than a wall of text.
• Keyboard access. Every control — search, filters, accordions, the theme switch, the back-to-top button and all form fields — can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone, in a predictable order. A skip link at the start of each page jumps to the main content.
• Visible focus. Focus is shown with a high-contrast outline that is never removed.
• Contrast. Body text meets or exceeds a 7:1 contrast ratio in both light and dark modes. A high-contrast setting is available in the accessibility panel.
• Text sizing. Text can be enlarged to 200% without loss of content or function, and the larger-text setting increases the base size without breaking the layout.
• Motion. The site respects the operating system's reduced-motion preference, and offers a separate setting for readers whose system preference is not set.
• Images. All illustrations are SVG line drawings with titles and descriptions. Decorative graphics are hidden from assistive technology.
• Forms. Every field has a visible label, a description where one helps, and status messages that are announced when they appear.
• Language. Pages are marked as English (Canada) so that screen readers use the right pronunciation rules.

Display settings

The accessibility button in the header opens a panel with four settings: larger text, high contrast, reduced motion and underlined links. A dark mode switch sits beside it. Settings are stored in your browser only and can be cleared with the reset button in the same panel.

These settings supplement, rather than replace, your browser and operating system settings. If you already use a system-wide text size or contrast setting, this site honours it.

Printed and downloadable material

Toolkits are laid out in black on white with no background tints, at a minimum body size of 11 point, with fields sized for handwriting and a wide binding margin. They remain legible when photocopied.

Large-print and plain-text versions of any entry, toolkit or publication can be prepared on request. Write to the reference desk with the shelf mark and the format you need. Preparation usually takes three to five business days and there is no charge.

Sessions and the reading room

• The Bannatyne Avenue entrance is step-free, with a 900 mm door and a level route to the reading room and washrooms.
• Two accessible parking spaces are available in the rear lot.
• Sessions are held in rooms with a hearing loop where the host organisation provides one; we state this when a session is announced.
• Discussion sheets are supplied in large print on request at registration, and facilitators read all material aloud as a matter of course.
• Interpretation, including ASL, is arranged where a host organisation can support it. Ask at registration so that there is time to make arrangements.

Known limitations

We would rather list these than imply the site is perfect.

• The embedded map on the contact page is supplied by Google and we cannot correct its accessibility. The same information is given as text immediately above it, and directions can be requested from the desk.
• Two older publications were typeset before our current standards and exist as untagged print files. Both are being retypeset; plain-text versions are available now on request.
• Tables in the topics and review sections require horizontal scrolling on very narrow screens. We are testing a stacked layout for a future revision.

Feedback and complaints

If you meet a barrier, tell us. Write to info@moolmes.club with “accessibility” in the first line, describing what you were trying to do, what happened, and the browser or assistive technology you were using if you know it. We reply within two business days and tell you what we can do and by when.

If our response does not resolve the matter, you may raise it with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission. We will cooperate fully with any enquiry.

How we test

Pages are checked with keyboard-only navigation, with a screen reader on at least two platforms, at 200% text size, in high contrast mode, and with automated checks for contrast, heading order and form labelling. New templates are tested before they are used, and the whole catalogue is reviewed annually. The last full review was completed in May 2026.
